Matcha vs. Coffee: A Feminine Energy Shift I Didn’t Expect

As women, we are not machines. We are not designed to sprint endlessly. We are cyclical, seasonal, sensitive, and powerful. And how we energise ourselves matters.
For years, coffee was my ritual
Bold. Fast. Reliable. It greeted me before I greeted the morning. It pushed me through my workday and re-energised me during nights of unrest and and gave me the illusion of momentum when I was running on fumes. Over time, I came to realise that my coffee use went from energising fuel to creating friction between my body and energy. My physical reactions shifted towards anxiety and overstimulation when exposed to caffeine. Even though I needed energy I refused to pay that price.
So I made a subtle switch. Instead of my morning coffee I began drinking matcha. What I expected to be a wellness experiment turned out to be a quiet but profound shift in how I related to energy, rhythm, and womanhood.
What Makes Matcha Different?
Matcha is finely ground powder from specially grown green tea leaves. Unlike steeped tea, with matcha you consume the whole leaf — which means a higher concentration of antioxidants, chlorophyll, and most notably: a slower, releasing caffeine experience.
The true magic of matcha lies within its L-theanine content, which functions as an amino acid that encourages both relaxation and concentration. When combined with caffeine, the drink provides balanced and clean energy. No jittery peaks. No sharp crashes. Just presence.
The Skin & Health Shift I Didn’t Expect
What began as a switch for nervous system support also quietly affected my skin and overall wellbeing. Within weeks of choosing matcha more consistently, I noticed a gradual yet noticeable changes that became evident with time rather than immediate observation.
Matcha contains abundant antioxidants including EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) that helps fight inflammation while reducing skin redness and minimising ageing signs. My skin felt less reactive. I realised the dullness I had blamed on lack of sleep or bad weather conditions began to fade away. A delicate radiance emerged which originated from my internal equilibrium instead of cosmetic products.
The Feminine Energy Shift
Coffee gave me masculine energy. It pushed. It sped up. It overrode. Matcha met me where I was. It supported. It steadied. It aligned.
Leading with presence instead of pressure became my goal as a woman, so I looked for something that would not trigger my survival response. The effect of matcha extended beyond simple alertness to create a feeling of internal regulation. My thoughts felt more anchored. My emotions less erratic. The transition to being reactive became more responsive which surprised me after consuming just a drink.
It became more than a swap. It became a signal. A reminder that I don’t have to hustle for clarity. That energy can be calm and still effective.
What Changed in My Routine
I used to begin my mornings drinking coffee on an empty stomach while my laptop was open and cortisol levels were high.
My mornings now feel like genuine mornings instead of business meetings. My day begins with water followed by light movement and breathing exercises before I enjoy a warm matcha latte with almond milk and collagen in quiet.
Physically, my digestion improved. My afternoon crash disappeared. My anxiety spikes softened. My sleep quality improved more than I expected despite continuing to consume caffeine.
I stopped depending on emotional highs to maintain my daily functionality. My body didn’t need to be jolted. It needed to be supported.

Matcha Brands I Recommend
Sevenhills Wholefoods – Affordable, organic, and rich in antioxidants. A great UK-based option for high-quality matcha that blends well into lattes and smoothies.
Golde – A Black woman-owned wellness brand offering superfood-forward matcha blends. Accessible and nourishing.
Maybe it’s not about quitting the hustle. Maybe it’s about no longer tying your worth to how fast you move.
In summary
This isn't a post about quitting coffee. I'm sharing insights about re-evaluating the sources of energy you choose to consume. The core message is in understanding your body's needs.
